OGP® SmartScope measurement systems are one of the world’s most popular and versatile dimensional measurement systems for precision measurement challenges. Designed to be multisensor systems from the ground up, SmartScopes combine optical, laser, and tactile sensors integrated seamlessly with the system mechanics and software. All sensors are simultaneously calibrated and available for use at any step in the measurement routine.

Why Multisensor?

Multisensor measurement systems provide complete 3D measurement data from a single measuring machine. Video, contact probes, laser, and micro-probes combine for total part characterization, with better accuracy, in a fraction of the time it would take to do on separate measuring systems. By using the best type of sensor for individual dimensions, multisensor systems measure parts faster, more thoroughly, and more accurately. This added versatility translates into lower capital expense and lower operating costs for your benefit.

The combination provides a high-resolution image engineered for video edge detection metrology.

A heavy-duty cast base and integral compound stage with Y-axis center drive provides stability. All LED coaxial, substage profile, and VectorLight ring light illumination is standard. Automated 3D Scanning Systems

ShapeGrabber® 3D laser scanning systems deliver fast, accurate and automated 3D measurement of complex shapes.  This includes molded plastics, castings, stampings, and machined parts that are typically time-consuming, costly, and difficult to measure. ShapeGrabber automated scanners are ideal in situations in which speed and ease of use are important. These systems scan parts in a wide variety of materials, colors, and finishes.  They are idea for use in rapid prototyping, manufacturing, quality control, and reverse engineering applications.

Fast Accurate Results

All models in the ShapeGrabber family achieve their inherent accuracy by combining a highly rigid and stable mechanical structure, with high precision vertical and rotary motion, state of the art calibration, and leading-edge optics. Using multiple motion axes, ShapeGrabber laser scanners eliminate the need for cumbersome manual software alignment and registration.  This ensures fast, accurate results.

Exceptional Speed, Accuracy, Resolution and Dynamic Range

At the heart of each ShapeGrabber system is the laser scanhead which digitally captures the size and shape of objects using a line of laser light. Laser line scanning differs from other laser scanning technologies which use a laser point sensor traversed across a surface. Both techniques create “point clouds” of data from the object’s surface.  But laser line scanners do so much faster and typically with higher point density.  Furthermore, laser line scanning processes coordinate point data from the entire line simultaneously. When presenting objects larger than the field-of-view of the scanhead, the system merges multiple line scans in sequence together.

OGP ShapeGrabber scanheads create high density points clouds of data from the surface of an object very quickly that is then used in combination with advanced software for dimensional measurement including GD&T. All ShapeGrabber 3D scanners are available as complete systems that include the appropriate scanhead for measurement needs.

Automatic Measurement

TurnCheck™ systems offer a fast, easy way to measure shaft, cylinders, and other turned, ground or extruded parts. Designed for placement on the shop floor with machine tools, TurnCheck systems provide improved process control through immediate feedback.  Operators can place parts for automatic measurement in seconds!

With a 135 mm wide field of view and a vertical range of 1000 mm, TurnCheck Series-14 shaft measurement systems can accommodate parts up to 175 mm diameter by 1000 mm in length.  The system will scan and measure all points and features automatically.  It handles the full range of dimensions and tolerances found on shafts and cylinders.

Distortion-free Images

The large field of view optical system produces distortion-free images that are truly telecentric. The LED illumination is carefully aligned to the optics to provide highly collimated light for nearly perfect back lighting of the work piece.  This produces a crisp and clear image of the entire part.

TurnCheck software allows easy measurement of diameters, lengths, distances, angles, radii, form, position, cylindricity, and runout.  Output point data is available for external analysis.

Rugged and Reliable

TurnCheck Series-14 machines are precision optical measuring systems built with reliable and rugged materials for thermally stable accurate measurements on the shop floor.  The Series-14 floor model has a granite base support for the rotary which provides a rigid base and isolates vibration.  The moveable tailstock assembly allows easy one hand operation for precision mechanical alignment of the workpiece.  Additional optional workholding kits that fit into the spindle accommodate parts that will not hold between centers.  A built-in light curtain safeguards the operators during automatic measurement.

Coordinate Measuring Systems

FlexPoint™ is the new generation of large format multisensor coordinate measuring systems from OGP®. FlexPoint offers a unique combination of sensors and CAD based programming, to solve a wide variety of dimensional measurement problems for large format parts.

The Multisensor Advantage

FlexPoint systems are true multisensor systems, supporting a wide range of tactile and non-contact sensors.  These include SP25, SmartProbe®, a unique optical video probe, and the interferometric TeleStar® Probe.  The SmartProbe is telecentric and has a large 12.5 mm x 9.5 mm FOV for high-speed 2D measurement.  All sensors are powered by ZONE3® CAD based metrology software.

The VersaFlex™ multisensor head offers up to three simultaneously available sensors on an articulating probe head. With several sensors simultaneously available, there is no down time while exchanging individual sensors from a change rack.  Likewise there is no need to recalibrate each time a sensor is used.

Cygnus Manufacturing Company (“CMC”) is a leading manufacturer and supplier of high precision products and components for the medical device, transportation, energy, and aerospace industries. CMC provides full-service manufacturing from prototype through production.

As an FDA compliant and ISO 13485 medical devices certified manufacturer, a leading US ventilator company approached CMC at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic requesting expeditious assistance to substantially increase its production of a specialty valve in response to the country’s shortage of life-saving ventilators. The ventilator company had a chrome on brass part which required measuring thirty-one datapoints after the part was manufactured and also after it was plated. Importantly, as a medical device manufacturer, they needed CMC to document all measurements. CMC currently manufactured this valve, but the substantial increase in required production volume in a compressed time frame necessitated a much faster and more automated measuring capability.

CMC needed a precision optical instrument designed to scan and measure cylindrical parts in seconds, not minutes. CMC turned to Inspection Technologies to identify a metrology solution for this emergency production. As an OGP® representative, Inspection Technologies suggested a TurnCheck™, a precision optical instrument, equipped with system software that is both intelligent and intuitive.

Since CMC needed a solution immediately to ramp-up production, Inspection Technologies worked with OGP to expedite the TurnCheck order and production. OGP was able to fast-track the delivery. Craig Harding, Chairman and CEO of Cygnus Manufacturing Company, stated “We were extremely pleased with the speed of OGP’s responsiveness and the high-quality performance of the TurnCheck system, allowing immediate increased ventilator production to help meet the country’s demand during this crisis.” OGP President, R. Stephen Flynn added “It is with great pleasure that we were able to meet the expectations of this customer to enable the manufacturing of such an important product during this difficult time.”

Chairman and CEO, Edward T. Polidor, remarked: “In my time with the company, I have witnessed a dramatic change in how optical instruments perform measurement. When OGP was founded 75 years ago, users typically relied on microscopes and optical comparators, depending entirely on their own judgement to ascertain the measurement. Today, the modern automatic video measuring system is completely computer controlled, using video cameras that depend little on the operator’s visual skills to produce accurate measurements. How these systems became more accurate, automated, faster, and ever more capable is OGP’s contribution to this remarkable transformation.”

Long History of Innovation

OGP has enjoyed a long history of innovation. The company started from humble beginnings in post-war 1945 producing optical comparators.  Automatic edge detection for the optical comparator was developed in 1956 in the form of Projectron, an early electro-optical image sensing system.  OGP introduced the first truly revolutionary computer controlled automatic video measuring system in 1980 – the Vidicom Qualifier.  Then, OGP pioneered multisensor measurement by adding lasers and touch probes to video systems starting in 1986 with the IQ-2000, and the technology advancements continue today with a wide range of powerful multi-sensing systems.

OGP systems have played a vital role in ensuring the quality of component parts used in a wide variety of industrial success stories: From personal computers and smartphones, to digital video and electric cars – even the space program. The new office was inaugurated by Mr. Fred Mason, Senior Vice President of Marketing, in presence of Ms.Therese Corrigan-Bastuk, Product & Brand Marketing Director, from QVI headquarters in the USA, and Mr. Shreyansh B Hippargi, Managing Director of QVI India Pvt. Ltd.

The new office was inaugurated by Mr. Fred Mason, Senior Vice President of Marketing, in presence of Ms.Therese Corrigan-Bastuk, Product & Brand Marketing Director, from QVI headquarters in the USA, and Mr. Shreyansh B Hippargi, Managing Director of QVI India Pvt. Ltd.

The Pune office joins the existing headquarter office in Bengaluru. These two offices will act as bases of operations for sales and service of the company’s products in southern India.

Quality Vision International (QVI®, www.qvii.com), the Rochester-based manufacturer of precision optical measurement systems, broke ground today on a new 16,000 square foot manufacturing building on its Hudson Avenue campus. Construction of the new building marks the last phase of a five-year, 37,000 square foot expansion of the company’s global engineering and manufacturing headquarters.

QVI Chief Operating Officer Keith Polidor remarked that “construction of this new building will complete our five-year plan to add the necessary manufacturing space for our expanded product lines, enabling us to serve the growing market for our metrology system products around the world.”

The new Building #4 is the final phase of construction to add additional manufacturing capacity. Beginning in 2014, the company added 12,500 square feet to its Assembly building, followed by a 4,200 square foot addition to its South machine shop, and a 4,000 square foot addition to its Customer Center showroom. Properties were acquired along Herald Street to provide the necessary land for buildings and parking. The Hudson Avenue campus occupies more than 275,000 square feet of manufacturing space and employs over 300 full-time staff.

QVI has been located at the 850 Hudson Avenue site since 1973. Prior to that, the company operated at 26 Forbes Street in Rochester, and at various locations in downtown Rochester since its founding in 1945.

“This additional capacity is a vital step forward as we continue serving our growing base of global manufacturing customers,” said R. Stephen Flynn, Sr. Vice President of QVI. “As precision and quality grow ever more important to consumers, our products become more important to manufacturers. This new space will allow us to build the larger and more sophisticated measurement systems that our customers need to improve their production processes,” Flynn said.

“So much of our growth is the result of our long-time partnerships with our Representative Partners,” said Flynn. “Twenty years ago, our Western New York Representative Dick Loewenguth helped break ground for our North Street Assembly Building. Today, his son Tom Loewenguth put the first shovel in the ground for this new building,” noted Flynn. “These long-standing relationships between manufacturers and their sales representatives are increasingly rare, and we take great pride in these partnerships that have helped us to become the world leader in vision metrology systems.”

QVI® (Quality Vision International, www.qvii.com) introduces SmartScope® SP high-performance dimensional measuring systems to the North American metrology marketplace.

SmartScope SP represents the leading edge of high-performance dimensional measurement, combining high-end scanning touch probe capability with traditional video measuring strengths, all delivered in a cost-effective package. SmartScope SP offers scanning probe, a large working distance optical/video sensor, an expansive optical/digital zoom range and a five-megapixel metrology camera, all as standard equipment.

SmartScope SP optics are designed for maximum imaging performance and flexibility over a wide range of applications. Its standard front objective lens offers the convenience of a large field of view, while the 5.5x zoom lens provides a range of higher magnifications to accurately image small features. An optional high magnification objective lens is easily interchanged when feature sizes require it. A 5.0-megapixel metrology camera and dedicated monochromatic illuminators contribute to sharp imaging at all zoom positions.

The SP telecentric lens system enables use of the QVI exclusive TeleStar® Plus through-the-lens interferometric laser. This TTL laser offers an extra-long working distance and sub-micron resolution, perfect for high precision surface profiling and depth measurements.

SmartScope SP is available in benchtop and floor model platforms. The benchtop SmartScope SP 332 offers a patented elevating-bridge design and provides machined-in squareness and a large work envelope, with a small footprint. SmartScope SP 463 is a rugged fixed-bridge floor model system that can handle larger, heavier parts, or groups of fixture-mounted parts, in a workshop environment. And SmartScope SP 663 offers an even larger measuring volume and high payload capacity.

New SmartScope SP may be seen in person at upcoming regional tech tours as well as industry trade shows throughout the summer, leading up to IMTS 2018 in Chicago in September.
